West Hawaii Explorations Academy middle school students competed in the ninth annual Hawaii State Science Olympiad held March 2 at Leeward Community College in Honolulu.
“The best part of science olympiad was participating in the actual completion. It was interesting and challenging. But that was only the icing on the cake. The best part was you knew that everyone there was interested in the same thing you are, and they are having just as much fun,” said Ally Niesneoff, an eighth-grader at WHEA.
More than 600 students from 15 schools statewide competed for individual medals and team trophies. WHEA students claimed one silver and four bronze medals; the WHEA team placed third overall in the middle school division.
Competitions included creating a vehicle using mousetraps for propulsion, building and testing crane and boom structures, and participating in a rotor egg drop.
